1918 Türkish Documents in English

In September 1918, Hafdan Wikner (a pre-war Lancer who later commanded the Regiment 1 Feb 1927 - 20 Jun 1929) was liaison officer for Chaytor's Force with Advanced Flight, 142nd Squadron, RAF. When the raid to Amman in Jordon had temporarily taken the airfield, he captured a series of documents from a Türkish officer. The documents are in pre 1929 Türkish using Arabic script (letters). This page features images of the original documents, and a translation into modern English prepared by Tibet Abak of Istanbul. Translation to modern Türkish also prepared by Tibet Abak is available as well, please use the button above.

What follows is an image of the original document, followed by the translation. In the case of diary entries, you will note that many of the items are of an administrative nature. Some is the poetry of soldiers written on the battlefield while thinking of their families, there are also family letters. Dates when expressed are not Common Era but based on the Islamic Calander. Turks at that time did not use family names (surnames). It was initiatives by the government of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, victor at Gallipoli that turned Turkye into a secular state with modified Latin script able to express the sound of the Türkish language, surnames to readily identify people and Common Era dates comprehensible internationally.

1 - The plague erupted in Edremit and the road between Edremit and Bayramiç is closed. The village, which is located at the junction of the road, is put under quarantine. Those who would try to use sideroads, bypassing the main road would be executed by mobile gendarmerie forces in the region.

2 - It has been heard that the Circassian cavalries are patrolling villages and towns for their self interests. In such circumstances, it is probable that ………? (unreadable, indistinct written).

3 - Entry to headquarters should be forbidden for irregular forces and those who have no official duties, and soldiers should not have conversation with those who encountered them.

4 - The plague germ spreads to humans directly through skin scratches and tears, or by fleas. Rats are very susceptible to the plague. Fleas on rats transmit to humans. To prevent this, bread pills should be laid in parts of houses where rats can be found. People also should be informed that these pills are poisonous and warned not to touch them. Perished rats should be washed with boiling water, or buried in the very spot.

5 - Animals like dogs and cats which transmit fleas should not be kept amongst soldiers.

6 - As there are various orders for killing the dogs in the vicinity of headquarters, these dogs should be destroyed immediately.

7 - Moderation and cleanliness should be observed to the utmost so as not to cause illness.

8 - All people should be informed about this instruction.

9 - Doctors should be vigilant about the plague in examination of patients

The operation for draining waters from ditches should be started immediately.

The fortification in the new military districts will include other minor ....(parts?) and the operation of reinforcement will start concurrently and should be finished as soon as possible. Particularly, it has greater importance that roofs for ditches, which would be occupied at nights, should be constructed to ensure protection against sharapnels

The locations of construction fields in the district are shown with marks in 1/25,000 dimensioned sketch. These will be improved and strengthened.

In the case of neccesity, dugouts would be once again constructed in spots approved by the division following the latter’s field survey.

The dugouts which will be built will be seperate for officers, rank and file soldiers, kitchens, toilets and animals. You see, my son, you should know well that the almighty Allah created this world from nothing. Everything whatever exists belongs to the almighty God who does not need anything, but everything needs him. He sees living beings, hears, everything is clear for him. There is nothing hidden from him. He does whatever he wants, no one can intervene in his doings, and no one can oppose against his verdict. He says, and he is strong enough, there is not anything bigger than him, there is no way to put on airs towards him, none of his doings are without reason, there is definitely a reason in every creation of him.

You see, my son, not to make a comparision, but how you worship your commander who watches you from a hole, even when you don’t see him, so you should be shy of of the god. Never put this out of your mind. Whenever you intent to do evil, immediately remember this. You know well that whatever you do, whereever you flee, you can not find a place hidden from the god. He always see you, always know you. Now, it is time to think once; can a man who knows that he constantly under close watch have designs on other people’s property, life, chastity, honour ....

It is a religious duty for an able person to make pilgrimage. There are places on roads to Mecca for wearing ihram (special clothe which Muslim pilgrims wear). When a pilgrim arrives in a ihram place, he performs an ablution and does not wear his own clothes anymore. He wears only a loincloth, and puts a towel on shoulder. After performing several prayer cycles, and pronouncing his intention to make pilgrimage for Allah’s sake, and after mentioning that he would make pilgrimage if Allah allows, he calls out "in the name of Allah", "thank Allah".

Intervention of neutrals

Switzerland also joined the diplomatic note sent by monsieur Wilson over the peace issue. In this regard, the first thing that brings to mind is that, as we mentioned in yesterday’s article, whether there is a commission of neutrals in front us or not. When it is taken into consideration that Swiss and American diplomatic notes has been submitted consecutively, even approximately simultaneously, that means an exchange of views took place previously between these two republics, one is European and other American.
